《圣经·新约·马太福音》第20章中记载了耶稣对其门徒讲的一则语言。有个葡萄园主一早就出去雇人来为他做工，与人讲定一天一钱银子。他在不同时间先后雇了几批工人。早来的人和后来的人都发给相同的工钱，即使是那些在第11个小时才进园干活，只在园中干一个小时的，也领得和那些已干了足足十二个小时的雇工同样多的报酬。为此，早来的人抱怨，但园主却说，原先讲定的一钱银子并没有少给。至于照样付给晚来的人是他心甘情愿的。耶稣用葡萄园喻指天国，意在说明能够进入天国的不分先后，即使在最后一刻也来得及。古时候犹太人将白天分为12小时，从清晨6点到下午6点。eleventh hour既不指现在的上午11点，也不指晚上11点，而是相当于日落前的下午5点，即白天12小时工作的“第11小时”，后被喻指“最后一刻”，有时还引申为“在最后关头”。常用的短语搭配为at the eleventh hour，而eleven-hour decision就指“最后一刻做出的决定”。
